FAMILY Agamidae (Agamas)

Male & Female Red-headed Rock AgamaAgamas
There are several Agamas recorded from this area, but other than around Gede none have been seen in Watamu for some years now. They are fast moving, agile lizards that can be distinguished by the very brightly coloured dominant males in each colony and the habit they have of bopping up and down the head. They are daytime animals that actively hunt for their insect food. The more common ones in the area would be The Blue-Headed Tree Agama Acanthocerus atricollis, The Black-Necked Tree Agama Acanthocerus atricollis, and The Red-Headed Rock Agama Agama agama.
