Great Plated Lizard

A large common lizard with an armour plated appearance. Averaging a foot to 18inches in length the Greater Plated Lizard is the largest lizard in Watamu after the Monitor Lizards. These lizards live in holes or rock piles and can become very tame indeed. People in Watamu have managed to tame them to a stage that they will readily take food offered from the hand. They eat insects and other small invertebrates and will eat fruit, flowers as well as small lizards and frogs. We also have two other similar but smaller lizards in this genus in the area. These are
The Yellow-throated Plated Lizard. Gerrhosaurus flavigularis and The Black-lined Plated Lizard. Gerrhosaurus nigrolineatus.
